The home that Martin Luther King was born in. King was born in an upstairs bedroom right here in this house January 15, 1929, he then lived here for 12 years of his childhood in the 1930s-40s before it became a rental property.
This house was purchased by King’s maternal grandfather Dr. A. D. Williams. I wonder how much he’s purchased this house for? Around that time the minimum wage was .22 cents an hour and the average worker made $200-$400 a year. I can only imagine.
This area is still an active community today and private residence. To keep this area protected the house on each side have been restored and are part of the historic site.
There are certain times you’re allowed to go in for an inside tour for a fee and no cameras are allowed in the real home (I heard) I didn’t go inside for a tour.
